That was done on purpose - it was a well-known (in aviation circles) experiment to se how much of an impact can the old DC-9 series take on landing. It was manned by 2 crew who escaped unharmed (but were testpilots) |

TripleDelta is right, it is the prototype version and they were testing the strength of it. After this they went back and stregthened it and it turned out to be a very succesful plane |
